Rawdatil Majaalis - The Gambia has elected a new executive at their first
congress held at Semega Janneh Hall at Buffer Zone with Baba Drammeh as
President; Abdoulie Cadi Kanteh as1st Vice President and Muhammed Sanusi Hydara
as 2nd Vice president.
Formed seven months ago, the oganisation is the umbrella body of all Majaalis sects in the country with its main objective of targeting to foster unity among different Majaalis sects in the country.
Phoday Mahmud Touray, the Association’s Secretary General said the Association was formed to bring together the Muslim Ummah and the Gambian population. “It is part of our aims to put discipline into our future leaders and also to discourage differences among Gambians in all spheres of life.”
He said the Association would also support the maintenance of peace and stability in the country, saying they totally discourage hate speeches that can incite violence.
Mr. Touray declared they would also work towards preserving the rich cultural knowledge, saying that was why all Majaalis sects in the country came together to form the Association.
He indicated that they would undertake awareness campaigns on the importance of peace and to support and protect Muslim women for them to play their role in the society.
In his farewell speech, the outgoing interim President Sheikh Bamin Jaiteh advised the new executive committee members to work hard for unity in the Association. “Make sure that the Association yield its purposes and work towards promoting peace and stability in the country by putting all Gambians under one umbrella”.
Public relations officer Abubacarr Jabbie and education secretary Morro Suwaneh both highlighted that the Association was formed to propagate and promote Islamic teachings in the country.
The event was graced by Islamic scholars in the country including renowned Islamic preacher Bakawsu Fofana.
