Election Observation Management (LEOM) under The Legacy Gambia; a youth-led
organisation have recently presented their election report to the University of The
Gambia Students Union (UTGSU) on UTG’s recent election at the University’s Moot
Omar Dibba, executive director of Legacy Gambia said they are a youth-led organisation that helps in providing right instructions and facilities for young people to enhance their skills, abilities and development.
He said The Legacy Gambia came up with a new idea to observe Gambian tertiary institution elections, saying they observed GTTI and MDI elections which, he said were conducted successfully.
He said the aim of observing the elections is to promote fairness to enhance electoral participation in The Gambia.
Secretary General of the University of The Gambia Students Union (UTGSU) Samuel Mendy said The Legacy Gambia have been helpful as their engagement have contributed to voter turnout increment this year from 50% to 70%. He said the aim of having The Legacy Gambia to observe the election is to ensure that there is fairness.
Dr. Ismaila Cessay, a senior lecturer at the UTG said, “I think it’s time for The Legacy to start observing Gambia’s elections because I see no reason why local organised observers cannot observe the election.”
