Municipal Council Interim Management Committee last Thursday presented a cheque
of 2 million dalasis to The Gambia Agency for Public Works –Gamworks- as part
of the Council’s counterpart contribution to ongoing projects within the
Officials say another 2 million dalasis was also presented to Gamworks some three weeks ago bringing the total to 6 million dalasis leaving a balance of little over one million which will be paid before end of the quarter.
“Establishment of the interim committee is to identify existing structures and constraints for addressing which some will be recommended to the government for further action,” Buba Sanyang, land and regional government ministry permanent secretary said at the presentation at the Latrikunda Sabiji market construction site.
According to him, projects of this nature are sponsored from tax payers’ money, adding that tax payers need to know that the little they contribute is what comes back to them in the form of development.
He explained that government has given all institutions including councils the leverage to operate within their mandates, urging the committee to be part of the project and to take it as their own.
The interim management chairman Bakary K. Jammeh said it was challenging in paying the counterpart contribution but because of its importance, it has been settled.
He said his committee is tasked by the ministry to put the municipality on the right footing for the incoming Mayor and team to have a quick start. “The biggest challenges of the Council were the cash flow and we have improved that through better efficiency in revenue collection.”
Director General of Gamworks Ebrima Cham said the US$14 million rural development project is an OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) financed project with Gamworks as the implementing agency.
