2017 Kafuta Marathon run was held on Saturday at a colourful ceremony in the village
in Kombo East.
The village’s annual sporting event attracted 23 competitors in both male and female categories from the village and other communities in Kombo East.
Fatmata Darboe emerged winner for the 3-kilometre girls’ category while Lamin Keita finished first in the male 4-kilometre race. All the competitors were presented with certificates, stationeries, books, set boxes and other prizes after the event.
The competition was organised by Kankiling Marathon Committee to promote education through sports. The championship was designed to promote grassroots sports in the village and the district in general.
The event, which is the fourth of its kind attracted different athletes from junior category only, as organisers say finance was their major obstacle in their quest to make the event bigger by inviting athletes across the country.
Ebrima Jassey, a member of the committee hailed the competitors for their courage and passion, saying their aim is to make the event bigger and better each year. He commended their sponsors, Young People Without Borders and Makasutu Real Estate for their support.
Jassey spoke about their efforts to start early campaign next year prior to the event proper, while calling on corporate bodies to partner with them to develop grassroots sports in the area.
