Jambarr FC in winning start

Jambarr FC of Mayamba village has opened the defense of their North Bank Regional male league title with a 2-1 win over Essau United in the opening game of the competition played at the Essau Lower Basic School football ground on Saturday.

Assan Nyang and Yusupha Sarr were on target for the Mayamba-based outfit while Modou Faye alias Sanneh registered Essau United’s lone goal.

Members of the Gambia Football Federation, sport personalities and fans within the region and the National Assembly Member for Lower Niumi Constituency, Matarr Jeng who took the kick-off, graced the colorful opening game.

On Sunday, Kunta Kinteh FC lost to Barra United by a lone goal at the Toubakolong football field while on the same day, Jokadou United were held to a goalless draw by Deggo FC at the Kuntair football field.

At the Illiassa football field that same day, Illiassa United beat Salikeni United by a goal to nil while Ngain Sanjal United lost to 2BN Armed Forces by the same margin at the Ngain Sanjal football ground also on the same day

Abou Khan, president of North Bank Region Football Association expressed delight with the commencement of the league competition observing that both teams had played real football. He urged participating teams to show fair play and to exercise discipline during the competition.

He went on to call on the Gambia Football Federation to come up with initiatives and gestures in helping regional leagues in their drive to decentralize football across the country.

He said Gambian young players have potentials that need to be supported for the development of grassroots football.

David Jarju, head coach of Jambarr FC said with their preparation prior to the encounter, they knew they were going to win.

Jarju said they hope to collect maximum points in their next game to maintain their lead at the summit of the table.

Dodou Jammeh, head coach of Essau United said his team played well and created better goal scoring chances but could not capitalise on them.  He said there still is room for his team to improve, adding that they will work harder to ensure that they qualify and secure their place in the second division league at the end of the competition because they have the players and management.
