As part of activities making the International Women Day celebration, Here Women Gambia chapter; an affiliate of Here Women International in the United Kingdom recently donated sanitary pads, soaps, diapers and detergents to the maternity ward of Serrekunda General Hospital in Kanifing.
“The items are vital for women who have been delivered of their babies as it would help them greatly to recuperate after birth. Sanitary pads especially are used during and after delivery and at times some women find it difficult to come with them due to financial challenges,” Here Women Gambia chapter chairperson Susan Jatta said.
Here Women International targets to combat injustice, inequality and violence against women and children and to empower them.
Mrs. Jatta said they choose to celebrate the International Women Day because women are brave to bring a life on earth that could cost them their lives. “Yet, they take the risk and are here to accomplish the task. They represent the true nature of women who have worked tremendously to bring good in our societies.”
Ndey Ngerr-Baldeh, treasurer of Here Women Gambia chapter said the organisation was formed in September last year with targets including fight against inequality on women. “We feel it is of paramount significance to come to the maternity ward here to celebrate the international women day with patients. These are women who give birth to children which of course are very risky as they can even lose their lives.”
Public relations officer of the Hospital Alieu Badjie thanked Here Women for their support; saying the gesture will go a long way in complementing the needs of the beneficiary families towards purchasing the donated items.
He said the hospital management appreciates the gesture, saying the items will supplement their effort in the sanitary aspect.
