Health Ministry conducts joint Annual Review forum

Ministry of Health and Social Welfare recently conducted their second joint annual health sector review forum at Djembe hotel. The meeting reviewed the sector’s progress and identify issues that need to be addressed to improve performance in the health sector.

Health minister Dr. Isatou Touray said the annual review have been institutionalised in countries where health sector wide approach became a popular mechanism for improving donor and partner coordination.

“The Joint Annual Reviews (JAR) became a key component of the reform agenda proposed by International Health Partnership (IHP) and other initiatives from its inception in 2017. It is only considered participatory when all stakeholders take part in the review process,” she said.

She said JAR provides a common basis for understanding issues, priorities, finding and recommendations that emanate from the review process, which can be followed- up through action plan and policy dialogue with stakeholders.

According to her, JAR is used in the context of a medium term health strategic plan where progress is monitored against the set objectives and strategies in the annual operational plan derived from the strategies plan.

Permanent secretary Muhamadou Lamin Jaiteh said the forum will enable health officials to gauge performance across the ministry and its partners to ensure improve health sector for the populace. “It will re-sharpen the critical role of the ministry in fulfilling its duty of accountability to the population.”

He said it is in the reviewing process where the right caliber of committed and hardworking workforce deliver on their mandate. “The task ahead is huge which makes it imperative for the leadership and all relevant stakeholders to be visionary about the future and work diligently to consolidate the gains registered so far,” he said.

Mr. Jaiteh said there is dire need for more concerted effort to ensure that there is harmonised coordination at all level of the health system. “We must be ready to strengthen collaboration and streamline our intervention if we want to achieve the vision, mission and objective set out in the national policy 2012-2020 and the Health Sector Strategic Plan 2014-2020.”
