8 every year is celebrated around the world as International Women’s Day (IWD).
Hundreds of events occur not just on this day, but throughout March to mark the
economic, political and social achievements of women.
The IWD has been observed since the early 1900’s - a time of great expansion and turbulence in the industrialised world that saw booming population growth and the rise of radical ideologies. The day is not country, group or organization specific - and belongs to all groups collectively everywhere. The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day – IWD is “Think equal, build smart and innovate for change”
The day is set aside to celebrate the remarkable contribution of women our society.
It also commemorates the inspiring role of women around the world to secure women’s rights and build more equitable societies. The day also remembers the voices of many women that go unheard and who continue to be dominated from securing their rights and realizing their full potential.
In The Gambia, a number of women have been contributing and continue to contribute to the socio-economic development of the country. In this year’s celebration of International Women’s Day, we look at the achievement of one Ms Fatou Seckan, a local vegetable producer at Darsilameh Youth Garden, West Coast Region.
The 23 year-old developed keen interest in marketing and what she is doing is directly linked to the concept of the the Agricultural Value Chain Interaction Platforms (AVIP).
Giving her level connection in the value-chain venture, Ms Seckan sounds confident with the ‘strong’ link she developed over time with buyers at Brikama market.
The Village’s Youth Garden is funded by the Nema project with an ultimate objective of improving the livelihoods standards of youth in the community.
Therefore, we salute Ms Seckan for her courage and resolve to make sure that women are not left behind in the development process. Gone are the days when women across generations had to struggle to bring about a day to recognise and celebrate women in the world. It’s time to appreciate and celebrate women for their efforts. Happy Women’s Day 2019!
“With knowledge and care. Women climbed the
mountains and dived into the ocean; They matched the steps with each man within
the world. International Women’s Day celebrates the facility of ladies – their
rights and role in our lives and society..”
