Gunjur dumps Kombo East to reach Super Nawettan semis

The 2016 Super Nawettan champions Gunjur on Tuesday thrashed debutants Kombo East 3-0 in the quarterfinal played at the Brikama Box Bar Mini Stadium to reach the semifinal of the 2017 Fibank Gambia Limited-sponsored Super Nawettan.

The champions finished top spot in group A with 7 points, after their goalless draw with Bakau before thrashing Serrekunda Central 3-0 and Lamin 1-0 prior to their last eight clash with the debutants, who finished runners-up in group C with 2 points, after their 1-1 draw with Serrekunda East before their goalless draw with Brufut.

The champions Gunjur and debutants Kombo East both came into the game with the motive of beating each other to advance to the semifinal.

The champions dominated the game and could have opened the scores through Red Star Family FC centre-back Saikou Barrow in the 15th minute of the game but his header was denied by Kombo East custodian Bubacarr Ceesay.

Gunjur opened the score through Smiling Real Estate FC Malang Jassey, alias Uncle in the 28th minute of the game from an astonishing free-kick to give the champions the lead.

FC BAX striker Lamin Jallow, alias Sako and Red Star Family winger  Mbemba Fatty, alias Iniesta both could double Gunjur’s lead in the 30th and 33rd minutes of the game respectively but their efforts went wayward, thus the first half ended 1-0 in favour of the champions Gunjur.

Upon resumption of the game, Gunjur maintained their supremacy over Kombo East and continued to threaten the debutants danger area.

Smiling Real Estate FC striker Malang Jassey, alias Uncle doubled Gunjur’s lead in the 57th minute of the game following a brilliant display between Mbemba Fatty, alias Iniesta and Yusupha Janneh, alias Del before the 2016 Capital FM Sports player of the 2016 Super Nawettan fired home to send Gunjur fans into wild jubilation.

Blaness FC prolific striker Yusupha Janneh, alias Del netted the third goal for Gunjur during stoppage time to send the 2016 Super Champions to the semifinal of the 2017 Fibank Gambia Limited-sponsored Super Nawettan.

The defeat means debutants Kombo East is out and will hang their boots until next year.
