GRA to host West-Central Africa Director Generals’ confab

Thursday, July 11, 2019

The Gambia Revenue Authority (GRA),has been unanimously nominated to host the upcoming regional conference of Director Generals for west and central Africa in 2021.

This announcement was made at the recent World Customs Organisation (WCO) Director Generals confab held in Brussels from 27 June to 1 July 2019. The  meeting was attended by a high powered delegation from GRA, led by its commissioner general, Yankuba Darboe. The forthcoming sub-regional confab is expected to attract 23 countries.

At the confab, The Gambian delegation also vied to fill a vacant position of the vice chair of the West and Central Africa Customs Organisation Finance Committee, which was endorsed without any objection.

In a related development, the Commissioner General also intervened to chair the extra-ordinary meeting of the delegates, following the resignation of the chair of the debate session causing a deadlock.  The delegates hailed Commissioner Darboe for volunteering and successfully chairing the debate session.

However, the international confab entails discussion on E-Commerce as an emerging concept. At the forum the European Union (EU) head of delegation was of the view that cross border E-Commerce cannot be underestimated. This opinion was also shared by some of the delegates. To this end, delegates underscored the need to put in place a tool to analyse data.

It could be recalled that the WCO has been rendering assistance to its members including the GRA especially in the area of capacity building.

Reacting to the development, the GRA top official expressed appreciation and honour to host the forthcoming confab to be held in The Gambia. He further assured that they will make sure the upcoming event is a resounding success, hinting that experts have already started work on the ground to ensure its successful conduct.
