Global Unification conducts drainage cleansing

africa » gambia
Tuesday, August 24, 2010

Global Unification (GU) The Gambia last week conducted a daylong clean-up exercise for drainage systems along the street of Babung Fatty, and then Serrekunda Health Center.

Speaking to this reporter shortly after the exercise, the Assistant Coordinator of Children Unit Global Unification Summer School, Ms. Jalika Keita said the exercise was conducted by 30 Global Unification summer students. According to her, they were out to clean the drainage systems along Babung Fatty Street and the street going towards Serrekunda Health Centre.

She said the drainage systems in those areas were completely blocked by rubbish, resulting in the flood of the compounds around those areas.

Ebrima Dem, the National Representative for Global Unification-The Gambia said GU members realised that Serrekunda is well-known to flood, noting that during the summer holiday, Global Unification contributes to Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR).

Mr. Dem said this is the first time GU is conducting their own cleansing exercise, noting that they were involved in other clean-up exercise, being organised by the KMC Disaster Management Committee. He said throughout the summer school, they want to develop the culture of community service. He noted that GU members appreciated Kanifing Municipal Council’s relentless efforts in giving them tractors, rakes, spades, pickaxe, etc to carry out their work with ease.

Dem finally appealed to the KMC, Concern Universal, NGOs, individuals and groups of people to help them with masks, boots, overalls, and gloves, to enable them effectively carry out their functions.
