Democratic Party (GDC) annual free football tournament is currently underway at
the Faji-Kunda Banjonkoto Football Field.
The tournament is organised by Ebrima Nyang, GDC National Assembly Member for Latrikunda Sabiji constituency.
Mr. Nyang said the tournament is fully funded by the GDC flag-bearer Mama Kandeh, adding that the tournament is geared towards promoting peace and oneness among young people.
Hannover FC locked horns with Jola Kunda FC in the opening match graced by hundreds of spectators including the GDC leader and his delegation. Both teams made an exceptional start to the game and created numerous goal-scoring chances but failed to capitalise on their limited opportunities thus the first half ended goalless.
Upon resumption from the first half, both sides gain created some goal- scoring opportunities but failed again to utilise on their limited goal scoring chances thus the game ended blank. This pushed the game into a post-match penalty shootout, which ended in favour of Hannover FC.
Hannover head coach Lamin Colley said he was glad with the performance of his team, hailing them for what he called their brilliant performance, and promised to work extra hard for their next game in order to maintain the winning spirit.
He applauded the GDC flag-bearer for his unflinching support to young people and to compete in football tournament. He challenged other politicians to emulate Mama Kandeh, saying that would move Gambian football forward.
Head coach of Jola Kunda expressed disappointment and dissatisfaction about the match but congratulated his boys for their remarkable performance and believed that they would have done amazingly well if the pitch was up to standard.
He urged the committee to look into the issue of a good and conducive football pitch for better performance. He lauded Mr. Kandeh for bankrolling the tournament and encouraged other political leaders to emulate him.
