Youth President of The Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC) has debunked what he
called unjustifiable refusal by the administrative secretary of the People’s’
Democratic Organisation for Independence and Socialism (PDOIS) to accept that
some of their members had defected to GDC.
Speaking to this reporter yesterday, MC Cham said GDC has noticed that the PDOIS party refused to accept that some of their supporters have switched allegiance to GDC, saying that the party even went further to suggest bureaucracy issues into political rally defections.
On Tuesday, PDOIS administrative secretary Edrisa Jallow dismissed claims that 81 members of his party have cross-carpeted to the Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC), describing it as false. “PDOIS as a political party does not work like that,” Mr. Jallow told our reporter, explaining that his party has a procedural way of doing things.
“Where on Earth have you seen someone defected from a particular party to another in a mass political rally and show his/her party membership card, letter of resignation or letter of relieve from a party?” Mr. Cham asked, saying people don’t necessarily need to apply to join a political party and so they don’t need to get a letter to leave their party to join another party. “Such bureaucracy does not exist in politics for ordinary members,” he said.
He insisted that they have videos of the defectors themselves who, he said had publicly announced their defection at a rally. He said the defectors are from the PDOIS and other parties. “Members of political parties are free to join any party without any document to prove their previous party affiliation. If they choose to announce that they were in your party, we will respect that and treat it as the way it is.”
