Some residents in the Greater Banjul Area (GBA) have been complaining about what they called the “suffering” they are currently subjected to due to continuous shortage of water supply to their areas by the National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC).

The country’s water and electricity company, NAWEC has been experiencing several interruption in water and electricity supply which forced the managing director Baba Fatajo to appeal for patience from the people while they try to settle the problem. He said it may take years to stabilise water scarcity within the Kanifing Municipality.

Ebrima Santa of London corner said he is disappointed with NAWEC for not providing the water they need within their community, saying the utility company has been existing for decades but still water and electricity remain a serious challenge to them compared to other countries in the sub-region.

“Every day, I have to wake up at 3am to fetch my gallons of water if not i will not have water to use in the morning. It is not fair that we are paying our bills to NAWEC and still we cannot enjoy our money. It is frustrating to stay in a country especially in a city without water,” he said.

He called on the government to allow private companies who wants to operate in the area of electricity and water.

Awa Jammeh and Alieu Jobe of Bundung borehole expressed similar disappointment to NAWEC for failing to adequately provide their needs after paying their bills.

They however said majority of their neighbors have their own boreholes but they do not have the financial muscle to provide one for themselves. They also call on the government to partner with NAWEC and get them out of the struggle.
