Thursday, September 02, 2010

Prominent Gambian youth and social development worker, Joseph Peacock, attended the Libyan National Youth Day from 18th to 22nd August 2010 held at the Rixus Hotel, Tripoli, Libya. The event was organized by the National Youth Council of the Great Socialist People’s Libyan Arab Jamahiriya under the auspices of His Excellency Dr. Saif- Al Islam Al Gaddafi, in accordance with the United Nations General Assembly adoption of resolution 64-134 proclaiming the year 2010 as the International Year of Youth.

This high profile event was attended by prominent world youth leaders and other key international development practitioners as a demonstration of the Libyan youth’s recognition of the importance of the contribution of the world's youth to bring about real change that can promote peace, prosperity, and continuous development. They undertook an unprecedented step to reach out and share their vision with the world.

The main thrust of the celebration was to demonstrate the significance of youth leadership in shaping the future and laying down the foundation for a global youth community. It was a significant moment that created dialogue and global youth cohesion in achieving worldwide youth cooperation and togetherness.

The Libyan youth chose to celebrate this annual event by inviting the most prominent world leaders of today aiming to promote and encourage mutual understanding between the youth around the globe.

The opening ceremony was punctuated by speeches from key world youth leaders who re-affirmed greater commitment in promoting world peace, to fight the spread of HIV and AIDS and hunger and, most importantly, to advocate for dialogue amongst nations for the benefit of world peace.

Meetings were held by youths from the same regions / continent while joint meetings were also held by youths from various regions / continent with a view to forging closer partnership.

The Gambian delegate was privileged to hold meetings with key international delegates representing institutions / organizations dealing in multimedia, advocacy on good governance and leadership, and on youth employment.

It was indeed a great platform that ushered in a positive response in addressing the many issues affecting youths globally, Peacock concluded.
