Gambian bags WHO Award

Momodou Gassama, National Professional Officer for Health Promotion in WHO Country Office in The Gambia, has been awarded by the World Health Organization (WHO) for his dedication to service and outstanding contributions to health promotion in the African Region.

The award was presented to Mr Gassama and his colleagues from the WHO Country Offices in Ghana and Nigeria by the Director General of the WHO, Dr Margaret Chan, during the 65th Regional Committee of WHO for Africa currently being held in Ndjamena, Chad, from 23 to 27 November2015.

According to the World Health Organization, Mr Gassama was given this award for being a dedicated and hardworking staff, and in recognition of his outstanding contributions to health promotion in the African Region, which is widely acknowledged and recognised both within and outside the organization. Mr Gassama has served the WHO for over 25 years in various capacities.

According to a press release sent yesterday to The Point, the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare said it would like “to congratulate the World Health Organization (WHO) Country Office in The Gambia on being one of three out of the forty-seven (47) WHO Country Offices in the African Region whose staff has been awarded the WHO Regional Office Award for Outstanding Staff Category for 2015”.

“By extension our sincere congratulations go to the Award winner for the Gambia, Mr Momodou Gassama, National Professional Officer for Health Promotion in WHO Country Office,” the release stated.

“In the same vein,” it added. “the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare also recognizes Mr Gassama’s contributions to strengthening the health sector in various ways (policy development, capacity building and technical support) covering the fields of health promotion, communication, tobacco control, prevention and control and non-communicable diseases, road safety and injury prevention and mental health.”

The Health Ministry also said that on behalf of the Government and people of The Gambia it would like to express its gratitude to the WHO Country Office for “its continued support to the health sector”.
