Gambia wins Jollof Rice Competition

After a solid three-year break from the annual organised Akwaaba Trade Fairs event, The Gambia which rejoined the forum in April this year has won the 14th edition of the Akwaaba African Travel Market 2018 Jollof Rice Cooking Competition, one of the highlights of the event.

Contesting from the #TeamGambia for the Jollof Rice Competition was Ida Cham Njai, the founder of Yabouy Home Cooking, Brufut. The Gambia contested alongside with other contestants from Senegal, Ghana and others.

The Jollof Rice Competition was so popular that it was tagged #JollofRice War in the 13th Edition of the Akwaaba African Travel Market 2017, which was won by Chef Idowu Olajide Micheal from Nigeria.

According to organisers of the 14th edition of Akwaaba African Travel Market 2018, Ikechi Uko, “the culinary event was meant to promote culinary tourism in West African as cuisine could be an excellent tourist attraction in travel destinations and local cuisine is an integral part of travel experience.”

Commenting on The Gambia’s achievement via telephone, Adama Njie, director of marketing – GTBoard who was also one of the panelists at the Africa Tour Operators Conference that discussed ‘The Role of DMC’s and DMO’s in Sustainable Destination Marketing’ prior to the competition said The Gambia is recognised of its high standard in terms of culinary delight.

He went further that (they) “we have shown the whole world including our African partners that The Gambia has a lot to offer and our culinary and gastronomies are well recognised as among the best if not the best in Africa. And The Gambia has really shown its strength in tourism in Africa and beyond.”

Akwaaba African Travel Market which annually brings together different countries around the world to participate is the only major international travel exhibition in West Africa

Idam Cham Njai, The Gambia’s representative at Jollof Rice Competition is the founder of Yabouy Home Cooking. She has spent the last 20 years working in the tourism industry and now offers cookery courses to tourists and visitors to The Gambia at her home in Brufut.

The #TeamGambia led by Abdoullahi Hydara to the 14th edition of the Akwaaba Travel Market 2018 includes The Gambia Tourism and Hospitality Institute, ITTOG, National Center for Arts and Culture, Members of TTAG and GHA, among other tourism stakeholders.
