Gambia U-17 Starts Training

As part of their preparations for the 2009 FIFA U-17 Youth Championship to be hosted by Nigeria in October later this year, the Gambia National U-17 team have started training yesterday at the Independence Stadium in Bakau.

Speaking to Pointsport the assistant coach of the Gambia U-17 team, Lamin Sambou, said the team would prepare well for the tourney in October in the Republic of Nigeria.

He stated that they would do their best to make sure the team performs to expectation in the FIFA U-17 Youth Championship come October, and he expressed confidence that the team will certainly perform to expectation.

He further stated that plans are underway to organise test matches for the team before they leave for the tournament proper in Nigeria.

Assistant coach Sambou pointed out that they also propose a test match on the 31st May 2009 against South Africa as part of preparations for the FIFA U-17 championship.

It will be recalled that the Gambia National U-17 were champions of the 2009 CAF U-17 Youth Championship after thrashing the host Algeria 3-1 in the final of April 2nd 2009.
