The head coach of the Gambia national U-17
team Abdoulie Bojang is optimistic that his side will perform to expectation in
the upcoming WAFU zone A U-17 football tournament to be hosted by Senegal from
September 9 to 18.
The Baby Scorpions are in Group B alongside Mali and Liberia in the Sub-regional football championship to be used as qualifiers for the 2019 Total Africa U-17 Youth Championship to be hosted in Tanzania.
The U-17 championship for the first time is to be played on a regional basis to determine the seven teams to join hosts Tanzania for next year’s final tournament.
The two finalists will qualify for the Total Africa U-17 Youth Championship in Tanzania.
The Gambia U-17 will undergo mandatory MRI scan to determine whether players fall within the eligible age limit for the competition.
The Gambia has qualified for the Africa U-17 Youth Championship four times and won the title twice in 2005 after beating Ghana in the final in Banjul and 2009 after defeating the hosts Algeria 3-1 in the final in Algiers.
Coach Lie Bojang said they are preparing well for the tournament, adding that they are also looking forward to playing some friendly matches before the tournament.
Coach Bojang stated the test matches would help them mentally and physically for the tournament.
