Wednesday, April 29, 2009

The Gambia U-13 cricket team settled for third position in their debut appearance in the just concluded ICC North /West Cricket Championship in Ghana.

The team beat Nigeria and Sierra Leone and lost to Cameroon and host, Ghana, to earn them a respectable performance for the first time at this level.

The team under the guidance of Coach Wilfred Riley, following a rigorous pre-tournament preparation, left Banjul mid-April for the one week championship.

Ghana emerged champions followed by Sierra Leone who occupied second spot.

The president of the Gambia Cricket Association,

Johnny Gomez who is satisfied with the result, told Pointsport that the boys did well having beaten favorites Nigeria and Sierra Leone.

The young cricketers were expected in Banjul yesterday evening.

"This shows how successful our developmental programme is at the moment," he stated.
