Gambia to take sides with Liberia in WAFU tourney final

Friday, May 04, 2018

Gambia’s Under-20 national team will clash with the 2018 Fox Sport sponsored WAFU Zone A football tournament host nation Liberia in the tournament final tomorrow Saturday at the Samuel K. Doe Stadium in Monrovia at 18:00.

The Young Scorpions defeated the “undefeatable” Ivory Coast 8-7 on post-match penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw in the regular time in the semifinal to advance to the final of the Sub-regional football championship for the second time.

Coach Matarr Mboge and his charges will scuffle to beat the host nation to lift the trophy for the first time after they were disqualified following their failure to honour the penalty shootout against Senegal in the 2015 WAFU zone A football tournament final in Mbour, Senegal.

The Young Leone Stars beat Mali 1-0 in the semifinal to sail to the final of the Sub-regional football tournament for the first time.

Liberia will be keen to defeat The Gambia in the final tomorrow to claim the WAFU Zone A football tournament trophy for the first-time in their history after their dismal performance in the previous competition.
