The head of Agriculture Division at the ECOWAS Commission at Abuja, Nigeria, Ernest Aubee, on Friday donated teaching and agricultural materials to Gambia Methodist Academy in Bakau.

The donation was part of his personal contribution to the school and welfare of the school children, especially in agricultural science.

Speaking at the presentation, Mr Aubee said the teaching aids cover very critical subjects, such as biology, chemistry, physics, agricultural science, geography and environmental science.

“These teaching aids are obtained from overseas, and I thought it wise to present it to the Gambia Methodist Academy, so that it can enhance the teaching of science and the other various subjects that are mentioned,” Mr Aubee said.

“In additional to that I have also got some CDs on agricultural science on school farms and gardens, because that is also very essential. As an agricultural country we must inculcate in the children, in the students, the best practices of agriculture so that they can adopt agriculture at a young age in school and take it seriously.”

The former board member of the school said further: “As agriculture is the backbone of The Gambia, and also of a whole number of ECOWAS member states, it is therefore very central.

“It could be recalled that I was a member of the board of governors of the Gambia Methodist Academy, since it was founded in 1995, and up to 2008 I was a member of the board, until I took off for this position to Nigeria under ECOWAS.

”I have been supporting the school since then with educational materials. I do contribute a lot to the library in terms of magazines, educational materials and other items that would enhance teaching and learning; so I am very happy to make another presentation this year as the school is also marking 20 years of existence.

“This is my own little contribution to the education sector of The Gambia.”

Mr Aubee also stated that plans are also underway to make a bigger presentation to the UTG Faculty of Agriculture.

In receiving the items, the principal of Gambia Methodist Academy, Mrs Hannah Harding, thanked Mr Aubee for the generous donation of the science teaching aids to the school.

Mrs Harding applauded Mr Aubee for always supporting the school.

She assured the donor that the items will be put into good use.

The vote of thanks on the occasion was delivered by the head girl of the school, who praised Mr Aubee for his continued support towards the welfare of students of the school.

“These items will go a long way in helping us in our research exercise,” the head girl said.
