The Gambia senior national team was on Saturday 4 June 2014 handed its heaviest home defeat since the official opening of the Independence Stadium in January 1984 by South Africa in their Africa Cup of Nations qualifier game played in Bakau.

The Scorpions, who were outplayed, were hammered 4-nil by a much superior Bafana Bafana side.

The defeat has ended The Gambia’s chance of securing a place in next year’s Africa Cup of Nations.

The Scorpions, who could only manage 2 points in 5 encounters, will face Cameroon away in their final qualification game.

Two first-half goals by Thamsanqa Gabuza and a stunning double by outstanding Keagan Dolly in the second half saw Bafana Bafana record one of the biggest away victories in this Afcon 2017 qualifiers.

Meanwhile, ten countries have secured qualification for the tournament proper with the remaining 6 due to be determined in September.

Teams that have qualified are Gabon as host, Guinea Bissau for the first time in their history, Mali, Cameroon, Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, Senegal, Zimbabwe and Ghana.
