Monday, October 30, 2017

The Gambia government has never recognised and does not have any intention to recognise Catalonia’s unilateral declaration of independence from Spain, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said.

“The position of The Gambia government is accordingly unequivocal in that the proclaimed independence of the Catalonia Region of Spain is not recognised,” the ministry said in reaction to fake news that The Gambia supports the decision of the Catalonia’s declaration of independence.

The news, which emanated from a fake Twitter account of MoFA, went viral for it was carried by notable international media outlets, including the RFI.

The Ministry of Information also swiftly reacted:  “This report is not only untrue but misleading and a misrepresentation of the official position of the Government and people of The Gambia.”

The full statements from the ministries of information, and foreign affairs are published below.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad (MoFA), would like to inform the general public and the diplomatic community that the Government of the Republic of The Gambia has never recognised and does not have any intention to recognise Catalonia’s unilateral declaration of independence from the Kingdom of Spain.

The position of The Gambia Government is accordingly unequivocal in that the proclaimed independence of the Catalonia Region of Spain is not recognised as it is not in conformity with the fundamentals of International Law and goes against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Spain.

The vitriolic information of Gambia’s recognition of Catalonia emanates from a fake Twitter account, dubbed “@MFAGambia.” The Ministry has taken steps for the immediate shutting down of the said false Twitter account and in the same vein requested verification of the Ministry’s official Twitter account, “@MOFAGambia” as well as its Facebook account -”Ministry of Foreign Affairs - The Gambia.”

The general public is hereby advised not to heed any information purported to emanate from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or authorised state institutions without proper verification of the authenticity of the source.

Ministry of Information

The Government of The Gambia would like to express its utter dismay the fake news circulating in the social media purportedly reporting that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of The Gambia has recognized the declaration of independence by Catalonia.

This report is not only untrue but misleading and a misrepresentation of the official position of the Government and people of The Gambia.

The Gambia and the Kingdom of Spain has long standing bilateral relationship and friendship based on mutual respect. This relationship, which is based on respect for each other’s sovereignty, continues to grow from strength to strength.

Therefore, the Government of The Gambia strongly disassociates itself from this misleading information. We hereby renew our commitment to a united Spain and hope that the Spanish people will find an amicable solution to this unfortunate impasse.
