Representatives of different credit unions in The Gambia recently returned from Kenya where they took part in the 16th congress of the Savings and Credit Cooperatives Associations (SACCA) of the Africa Cooperative Savings and Credit Associations (ACCOSCA).

The 20-member delegation was led by the general manager of the National Association of Cooperative Credit Unions of The Gambia (NACCUG), Baboucarr Jeng.

The international congress, held from 28 to 30 October 2015, brought together representatives from credits unions and international organisations from across the world.

The SACCA congress is said to be ACCOSCA’s largest event and this year, it brought together about 700 cooperators from 27 countries all over the world to address topical issues facing SACCOs.

The congress, on the theme: “Unification of African Cooperatives”, also explored strategic and innovative techniques of ensuring sustainable cooperative financial institutions.

Issues like membership drive, risk management, relationship between board and management, strategies for supporting inclusion, were discussed at the congress.

Officials said this year’s annual gathering would be the beginning of the unification as cooperative movements will henceforth speak with one voice for the growth of the sector.

They said SACCA congress is the only assembly where cooperators in Africa get to meet and share new trending innovations that are suitable for attaining suitable cooperative development in Africa. The forum also served as a platform for networking with other players.
