Gambia celebrates African Child Day

Thursday, June 20, 2019

Gambia on Sunday joined the rest of the world to commemorate the Day of the African Child at a colorful ceremony held at The Gambia Radio and Television Services (GRTS) building.

The commemoration, which was organised by the National Youth Council, brought together school children, parents as well as government officials. The theme for this year’s commemorations is Humanitarian Action, Children’s Right First.

Addressing the gathering, Sarata Ceesay, Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly for Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC), indicated that June 16th annually is celebrated around the world as the Day of the African Child.

“Every year we do have speeches from duty bearers and government officials on this day. Today, I’m here to speak on behalf of the children of The Gambia as a deputy speaker of the Children’s National Assembly of the Gambia”.

She stated that the theme for this year’s celebration is quite apt, as during humanitarian crisis children are most vulnerable due to impact effects and consequences ending up to loss wealth, homes and families.

The Gambia, she added, is among the countries that are prone to humanitarian crises such as floods, drought, bush fires and rising sea levels due to its position below sea level and proximity to the Atlantic Ocean.
