Brusubi side Gaite Football Club were crowned
champions of the Late Wonto Saidy Football Tournament on Saturday after beating
Abuko United. Patrick Sylva’s strike in the first minute of the game sealed
their victory in the game played at the Serekunda East Mini-Stadium.
Gambia international Modou Secka Barrow, who plays for Reading in the English Championship, staged the tournament. He named the tournament after his late mother Wonto Saidy.
The tournament targets at developing grass-root football in the country and had brought together 20 teams to compete for a D200, 000 prize sponsored by Modou Barrow.
As winners, Gaite were awarded a giant trophy and a cash prize of D100, 000, while runners-up Abuko United took a consolation prize of D34, 000.
All the participating teams were given a consolation amount of D3000.
