GAF wins May Day Mass Sports tournament

The Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) has yet again won the 2019 edition of the May Day Sports events tournament after gathering 187 points in the overall events that was held at the Independence Stadium on Sunday.

The Soldiers who has always been consistent in winning the May Day Mass Sports has again defeated their arch rival Gambia Police Force (GPF) in the male Tug-of-War, while GPF also won female category.

The top 10 of the institutions and companies during the May Day Mass Sports tournament:

Gambia Armed Force (GAF) became winners with 187 points, followed by Gambia Revenue Authority (GRA) with 166 points while Gambia Police Force GPF) occupied 3rd position with 157 points.

Gambia Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) came out 4th with 142 points, followed by Gambia Ports Authority (GPA) on 5th with 120, and Kombo Beach Hotel is on 6th position after having 119 points.

Banjul City Council (BCC) 7th with 104, MRCG and LSHTM 8th with 103 points, NAWEC is on 9th levelling with Lasting Solutions with both having 102 points.

Speaking in an interview with The Point Sports, winners GAF Team manager, Warrant Officer Man Dampha expressed delights for winning another May Day Mass Sports event, noting that it is not a surprise winning the May Day Sports tournament, adding that there are many reasons for their success in winning the country’s Mass Sports tournament.

“As our name implies everybody is expecting us to be winning in this kind of events because when it comes to defending the nation, people will expect GAF to defend the nation and this kind of things will not be our problem.

Commenting about the issues of rivalry between them (GAF) and (GPF), W02 Dampha said that to them they are not rivals with the Gambia Police Force, saying that they are all the same but believed that maybe rivalry comes when both of them are competing for the same thing.    

According to him, they have always been winning the police in this tournament but said that they started winning in the last two years because they studied them and their tactics which was the reason they won two years ago.

For her part, Madam Joof, team manager for the Gambia Revenue Authority (GRA) also expressed delights for being part of the top five winners of the May Day Mass sports, noting that there secret this year was the full support that was given to them as part of their preparations 

“Our secret this year is that our management paid for almost all the gyms for their staff to train to be healthy and also doing some regular exercises. We also started early training for this year’s May Day events and also employed young one who are doing very well in sports.

According to her, defeating Police the this year  is something very important for them, adding that they will continue to  upset companies and institutions that are known for sports in the country  when it comes to May Day sports.

Amie Jabang, manager of the Gambia Police Force (GPF) also expressed delight  to be in the top three winners for this year’s sports, adding that though they deserve much better than being in the 3rd position but notwithstanding they are very happy.

“I am very happy to have defeated GAF in the female Tug-of-War event. I am always with the believe that come this year we will win GAF in the female Tug-of-War.

According to her, their secret have always been the same training that they have been doing, noting that they have just empower and adjust themselves this year compared to the previous years.

Commenting about the issues of rivalry between them (GPF) and (GAF), Mrs Jabang said that they are not rivals with them and that GAF has never been their problem. She added that they just defeated them this time around like how they (GPF) always do in the previous years.
