Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) graced the international volleyball championship
yearly organised in Ziguinchor, Senegal on the 26th December 2017.
The championship, which took place at the stadium municipality of Pedro Gomez and Santhiaba volleyball court brought together different countries such as the Gambia, Mali, Guinea Conakry and Senegal.
The championship, which was played in a fitness form started with group stage matches, with GAF female volleyball team topping their pole and being drawn against their Gambian counterparts GAMTEL /GAMCEL in the semi-finals.
They defeated their Gambian counterparts by three sets to two. The Khaki girls took on Mali in the finals of the female category at the same venue. GAF came from behind to win the final at the expense of Mali by three sets to two.
During the presentation ceremony in the stadium municipality of Pedro Gomez, individual awards were given to the following: head coach. GAF Lamin L.F. Badjie was awarded the best coach in the female category, while GAF female referee Fatou I. F. Colley was certificated the best referee in the international volleyball championship.
GAF’s Saffie Sawaneh was also awarded a certificate as the best blocker and was also selected among the seven best players of the championship. Fatou Sillah of GAF was certificated as the youngest, best attacker and player of the championship.
Head coach Lamin L.F. Badjie said it was a great experience for him and the players to be in the international volleyball championship and he is looking forward to the forthcoming national volleyball league to defend his five time unbeaten league record.
Nyima Demba the team captain noted that it was a real exposure for them. She also thanked her fellow players for the great fighting spirit showed in lifting both the Gambia and military flags high in Ziguinchor.
