Fraudster sentenced

Principal Magistrate Omar Cham of the Brikama Magistrates’ Court on 3 October 2017 sentenced Ebrima Saidy to pay a fine of D5, 000, in default to serve 10 months in prison with hard labour.

Ebrima Saidy pleaded guilty to a single count charge of obtaining money by false pretence.

The prosecution alleged that the convict on 29 August 2017, at Ndemban village in the Foni Bintang District with intent, defrauded one Malang Camara in the sum of D4, 700.

Ebrima Saidy, who visited the complainant claimed to have been living in Sweden for the past years, was in the country for the Tobaski feast, when he requested to see the complainant’s father (a marabout) to purify him.

Whilst in the compound he saw the daughter of the complainant who was ill and he volunteered to assist the complainant to cure his daughter and to take her for an overseas treatment.

The convict asked for D2, 500 to obtain medical documents, but he was given D3, 000, after which he left only to return after a while to demand for D1, 700 and was never seen again.

After sometime, the matter was reported at the Somita Police Station and he was later apprehended.
