FIFA President Infantino meets Barrow

President of World football governing body FIFA, yesterday paid a courtesy call on President Adama Barrow in his office at State House.

Gianni Infantino was earlier expected in the country with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) president Ahmed Ahmad who is currently attending CAF award ceremony in Dakar, Senegal.

President Adama Barrow described Infantino’s visit historic in the annals of Gambian football, saying it happens under his leadership for FIFA president to visit the country.

He said New Gambia has witnessed visits of several world leaders including AU sitting chairperson, foreign minister of France and now President of FIFA. He said football is a very loved sports in the world and the most watched game, noting that he is a big fan of football as he follow sports.

“You cannot develop football without finance and unfortunately the country is small as well as it economy. We need the support of FIFA to balance though size does not matter but what we can do,” he said.

He appealed to FIFA to support the country’s football development, saying that people used to play the game for passion but now it is one of the most lucrative business in the world.

Mr. Infantino said Gambia is a football nation just by looking the faces of its people, noting that the purpose of their visit is football development in the country which, he identified as the magic of African football.

He said what is happening in The Gambia is something very special, noting that the country is a small country but likes football with true passion. He also appealed to GFF to do more in terms of its players development.

He promised that FIFA will support The Gambia in increasing the available funds for the development of the country’s football more especially women football.
