Farafenni Murder Suspect Opens Defence

Bakary Kanyi, who allegedly murdered one Lamin Camara, a well-known businessman in Farafenni town, last Thursday opened his defence at the Special Criminal Court in Banjul before Justice Joseph Ikpala.

The accused, Bakary Kanyi, who was being led by his counsel, told the court that he is currently residing at Mile 2 central prison, and was aware of the offence for which he is standing trial.

He denied knowing the name of the deceased person, and he could not also recall any deceased person's name or committing the alleged offence.

At that juncture, the defence counsel, Ouzuma, applied for an adjournment to enable him structure his case.

State Counsel N. Jallow, who held brief for the Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions, did not object to the application.

The case was at that juncture adjourned till 17th February 2011.

Shortly after the case was adjourned, the accused person informed the trial judge that he could not see, and he has complained to the prison authorities but he was never taken to the hospital.

The trial judge then ordered the prison officers to take the accused to the hospital before he goes blind.
