football fans at home and abroad have expressed anger and disappointment
following the Scorpions 1-0 home defeat to Togo in the 2019 Africa Cup of
Nations qualifier played at the Independence Stadium on Tuesday.
Fans were left disappointed after Togo defeated the country’s national team despite missing several goal-scoring opportunities. Togo’s Hawks secured a slender victory in the return leg in Banjul.
The Scorpions failed to beat the 10-man team of Togo who had their captain Djené Dakonam Ortega sent-off in the second half.
Gambians were largely cautious during the match and had chances to score but were not clinical in front of goal throughout the game. The visitors netted their lone goal through Fulham attacker Floyd Ayité in the 92nd minute to silence Gambian supporters.
Mareek Samateh said he would now stop watching Gambian football because the players always disappoint him and other fans.
Mamudou Janneh also said he was disappointed with the Scorpions performance while Kawsu Dibcy said there is no need for him to be watching Gambia national team games again because they always disappoint the fans.
Alasanna Bah said the national team only plays football for pleasure but not to qualify for major football competitions and Abdoulie Konateh said as far as GFF is not doing fair selection, it would be difficult for the country to qualify for major competitions.
Ebrahim Njai also said Gambian team lacked creativity in the game, saying they need a very creative player who can hold the ball and feed the strikers. He said the Togo defeat was a big disgrace to Gambian football.
