Union Ambassador to The Gambia, Atila Lajos has said that the appointment of
Defense and Interior Ministers by President Adama Barrow is commendable. “The
validation of the National Security Sector Policy and the recent appointment of
a Minister of Defense and Minister of Interior is commendable and most
welcome,” he said during the forum for dialogue- Directing Security Sector
Reform (SSR); held at Metzy Hotel.
He said the decision undoubtedly shows President Barrow’s commitment to making more progress in SSR, if the work of the drafting team is to be successful, it will be vital that the executive level are actively engaged in the drafting process.
According to him, regardless of the resources and technical expertise invested in the SSR process, without strong political engagement from key decision- makers, there will be a failure. “As there are always those who will continue to tell us that we can’t attain our goal, we can’t have what we are looking for.
The diplomat affirmed that very few people would have believed three years ago that change of government would be possible in The Gambia. “As for the EU, our commitment must be measure by more than just the Euro and Dalasi we spend here (Gambia). The true sign of success is not whether we are a source of aid that helps people scrape by or whether we are partners in building the capacity for transformational change.”
