international football player, Ebrima Sohna, is set to sponsor a D75, 000
football tournament for the community he grew up.
Speaking in an interview with this reporter yesterday, Sohna said the tournament is a way of saying “thank you” to his fans – a place he grew up and everyone that has supported him over the years.
Sohna added that it was good to always remember those who were there for you, saying these people have been there for him when he was young and not earning anything.
He noted that he hope his generosity was appreciated and also help in promoting grassroots football.
He said he will meet with participating teams to make them know that the tournament is about fun, unity as well as setting an example for other communities.
Registration for the tournament is free, he said, adding that the winner will receive D50, 000 while the runner up will pocket home D25, 000.
He thanked everyone, saying he appreciated everything they have done for him.
Sohna also supported Fass Njaga Choi with three footballs following the village’s plea on radio for support.
He expressed his readiness to continue staging the tournament. He also said that he wanted to also open the door for others to get in and do more than him in terms of supporting grassroots football development.
“This is just the beginning and I want to motivate others to do the same,” he stated.
He also expressed his wish to support Gambian female football in future, saying he follows every activity of Gambian female football.
He concluded by appealing to everyone to concentrate on female football a bit as they need support.
