DLEAG operatives uncover drug bunker in Foni - 10 arrested

Operatives of the Drug Law Enforcement Agency The Gambia (DLEAG) have arrested 10 people in connection with the discovery of over 250kg cannabis from a bunker in the bushes near Sibanor village in the West Coast Region (WCR). Cocaine was also discovered, The Point has been informed.

The spokesperson of the DLEAG, Ousman Saidybah, confirmed the development to our reporter, saying the suspects are currently under custody as investigation continues.

The DLEAG public relations officer (PRO) explained that one Lamin Touray, a native of Brikama Darsilameh was arrested with 160kg of suspected cannabis. He is alleged to be one of the biggest cannabis smugglers within the Greater Banjul Area (GBA).

PRO Saidybah further disclosed that Mr. Touray was recently taken to court but was later acquitted and discharged. He stated that two other Senegalese were nabbed with 16 and 6 kg of suspected cannabis respectively.

The DLEAG spokesperson said four other suspects were arrested after a hot pursuit using a taxi to smuggle more than 38 kg of suspected cannabis.

The DLEAG spokesman said a lady was arrested using a metal box to traffic 36 kg of suspected cannabis. “Our agents are doing everything thing possible in ensuring that no one transports cannabis or other related issue in the country.”

 According to him, a Nigerian and a Gambian national were nabbed with some suspected quantities of cocaine. However, other Gambians were also nabbed with over 30 kg of suspected cannabis in the Kanifing Municipality, saying half ton of suspected cannabis is under seizure.

He thus called on commercial vehicle owners to be cautions of the kind of people that they give their vehicles to. “We will use all measures necessary in making the country free from drug related issues and Drug Control Act will be enforced to the later without prejudice, fear or favour.”

Saidybah said illicit drug abuse and trafficking continue to pose serious threat to national development, socio-cultural and religious lifestyles and values.

Therefore, he added, he promised that they will continue on their crusade in eradicating the menace in our societies

To this end, he called for the collaboration of the general public in stamping out the menace in the country.
