Disqualifying APRC’s URR candidate is illegal: Party leader

The party leader of the Alliance for Patriotic Re-orientation and Construction (APRC), Fabakary Tombong Jatta has told journalists that disqualification of Pa Amadou Susso’s candidacy by IEC is illegal because it doesn’t agree with the Gambian Constitution.

He made this remark at press conference held at his compound in Tallinding.

Pa Amadou Susso was nominated on the 23rd of April, 2018, in Basse as APRC’s candidate for chairmanship but was later disqualified after records found out that he was once convicted before a court of law.

Mr. Jatta said that the IEC supposed to be independent because it is charged with administration of election according to law, arguing they are expect to be well informed and do the necessary research and consultation with their lawyers before coming up with such a final verdict.

The former majority of the National Assembly further argued that the action by the IEC contravenes Section 26/3 of the constitution which states: Every citizen of The Gambia with full age and capacity shall have the right, without unreasonable restrictions (a) to take part in the conduct of public affairs, directly or through freely chosen representative; (b) to vote and stand for elections at genuine periodic elections for public office, which election shall by universal and equal suffrage and be held by secret ballots; (c) to have access on general terms of equality, to public
