on Wednesday adopted a motion for the establishment of a Parliamentary
Friendship Group between the National Assembly of the Republic of The Gambia
and the National Assembly of Popular’s Power of Cuba after a daylong
The motion was tabled by the minority leader and National Assembly member for Niamina Dankunku, Hon. Samba Jallow. He remarked that The Gambia and Cuba have enjoyed longstanding brotherly relations based on mutual cooperation and understanding. “The two countries share many common interests and purposes ranging from health, agriculture etc.”
According to the minority leader, the establishment of this parliamentary friendship group shall enhance cooperation and support between the two legislatures in key relevant areas; such as development, cooperation, legislative support, technical assistance, as well as boost people-to-people relations among others. “The Gambia and Cuba have been great friends and The Gambia has been offering support to Cuban interests in the international arena,” he said, adding that Cuba has been contributing to the improvement of medical services in The Gambia by providing doctors and nurses to the country.
The Niamina Dankunku legislator said Cuban doctors, nurses, technical and medical collaborators serving in almost all the regions of the country, have greatly improved access to health care delivery in the country.
“With the establishment of this Parliamentary Friendship Group, it would continue to strengthen relations and collaboration in other relevant fields for mutual cooperation and development.”
Hon. Jallow added that the mandate of the friendship group is to foster inter-parliamentary relations, to further contribute to the development of the bilateral relations; the group shall serve as the linkage between the two legislatures on all cooperation and support.
