A United States-based Gambian- Sarjo Dambelleh on Tuesday donated walking Aids, such as walking frame, mattresses and Rollators of medical equipment to the Department of Social Welfare.
The donation came through Hon. Momodou Ceesay widely known by his moniker- Morro, who is the National Assembly member for Janjangbureh in the Central River Region. The items are meant for onward distribution to vulnerable people in our communities.
At a presentation ceremony witnessed by staff of the department in Banjul, Hon. Momodou Ceesay, the NAM for Janjangbureh recalled the background information leading to the presentation of the items, saying the items were donated by his cousin brother, Sarjo Dambelleh, who is also a native of Janjanbureh currently based in New York.
The donor, he said, also secured these items from a New York hospital, adding that the donated items are not meant for sale, as it is a free gift.
He added that the donor want to be assure that the gift are giving to the right people which is the vulnerable people within our society.
According to Hon. Ceesay, this is what prompted him to think of department of social welfare been the most suitable institution responsible for disable people. He also seized the challenged the management of the department of social welfare to ensure that the items are put into good uses and are giving to the right people and a track record are kept as who and who benefited from this gesture.
Receiving the items, the Director of Department of Social Welfare, Mr.Jankoba Jabbi, expressed delights on behalf of his department to be associated with this very important donation, which he described as ‘timely’ and long overdue.
The department, he said, is very much appreciative of the items, further describing the donor as a patriotic Gambian, who have the welfare of Gambians at heart.
‘The department value this donation very much as far as health is concern. These items are valuable necessity and the demand for it at our hospitals is very high’.
The Director thus called on other Gambians in the Diaspora to emulate Sarjo Demballeh so as to develop the country’s health sector.
The Director went further to underscored the importance of the donated items, saying at least every day a person is amputated at our hospitals, noting that all those amputees depend on the Department of Social Welfare for support.
‘We have a lot of cases around the country, but all their referral point is the Department of Social Welfare’.
Also speaking Gabu Jarjue Head of disability at the department of social welfare commended the donor for this magnificence gesture, noting that these items will go a long way in helping the vulnerable in their communities. He also call for more support in term of wheel chairs and other medical equipment as the demand is increase on daily basis.
Also Sainey Camara staff of Dept of social welfare attach at Disability Unit service as rehabilitation technician expressed similar sentiment and called on the need to people to draw more attention to the Department of social welfare, we need more support to take care of vulnerable people or disable people.
