Gambia international Demba Savage has returned to Finland to sign for FC Honka, after ending his seven-month venture in Turkey.
The 30-year-old who scored the winning goal that secured Buyuksehir Belediye Erzurumspor a promotion to the Turkish top-tier was one of six players that were asked to leave the Super Lig club despite penning a two-year deal in January.
He has now secured a reunion with Esport Honka, a club he had success with from 2008 to 2012.
Honka failed to disclose the length of Savage’s contract but Gambia Sports can confirm he has signed a one-year contract, a deal that will see him stay at the club until December 2019.
“We usually do not report the length of the contracts but Savage fits in our roster and game style well. And [we signed him because he is Macoumba Kandji’s good friend” Hexi Arteva, Honka’s sporting director said.
He revealed that Savage could be a good match winner for the club. ‘’We are so glad to get him back to Honka,’’ Arteva pointed out. He is very well suited to their game plan.
Savage is, in my view, one of the best ever foreign players in the Veikkausliiga,”Arteva lamented.
Savage ended his 10-year stay in Finland to move to BK Häcken on a three-year contract in 2016 before returning to Helsinki after a year at the Swedish club, guiding the club to their 28th Veikkausliiga title. He left Finland again to move to Erzurum, a city in eastern Anatolia in Turkey prior to his reunion with Honka.
Savage won four Veikkausliiga titles with HJK and also won the Svenska Cupen (Swedish Cup) with Hacken during his brief spell with the Gothenburg-based club. He played 179 matches for HJK Helsinki, scoring 58 goals in total.
The former Gambia Ports Authority winger is expected to make debut for Honka when they host his former club HJK Helsinki.
