in Central River Region (CRR) has elected Demba Konjira as chairman of the
region’s Gambia Teachers Union Cooperative Credit Union (GTUCCU) board of
director during an election held at the regional education office in
Mr. Konjira contested for the position with four other candidates in the names of Malang S Kuyateh, Kebab Konteh, Ansumana Darboe, and Abdoulie Fatty. In the first round of the election, Mr. Konjira and Abdoulie Fatty had a voter tie of 48 to 48 while Malang S Kuyateh got 17 votes, Ansumana Darboe with 30 and Kebba Konteh with 9 votes.
While the other 3 candidates were dropped in the first round, Mr. Konjira and Fatty went for the second round in which Mr. Konjira secured 82 votes and Mr. Fatty, 70.
Mr. Konjira had promised to serve the Union to the best of his ability without any form of discrimination and appealed to teachers to be united for progress. He said his opponents’ losing the election does not meant they are losers. “My doors will remain open to everyone to work hand in glove, based on the development and welfare of teachers.”
He promise to take serious engagements to find permanent solutions to some of the concerns of teachers, including proper training of school representatives and the creation of consumer shops within the region to enhance ease for teachers’ access to resources.
Lasana Jallow, representative of Takongkuda Lower Basic, Bakawsu Konateh head teacher of Brajally Lower Basic and cluster secretary for Jarumeh cluster, both commended the electorates for empowering Mr. Konjira.
They called on teachers to join hands with Mr. Kanyi for the benefit of teachers’ development. They also called for equality within CRR-north and south and appeal to Mr. Konjira to work harder towards teachers’ development.
