Debates on Budget Estimate suffers setback

Wednesday, December 06, 2017

Legislators at the National Assembly Tuesday postponed debate on the Budget Estimate, as Finance minister prepared some adjustment;

They are expected to spar on the matter today, Wednesday 6th, 2017.

Speaking at the Assembly, Speaker Mariam Jack-Denton informed that the period allocated for the debate was three days, but said that the matter would now be debated in two days instead.

Some legislators, however, argued they needed time to see what had been adjusted.

Hon. Ousman Sillah argued that the constitutional procedures needed to be followed before making any adjustment. “Let the minister wait until we start the debate then he can come with this adjustment,” he said. “I think that is the best way rather than adjourning this debate.”

Presenting the adjustment budget before members, Amadou Sanneh, the minister of Finance and Economics Affairs said these adjustments were essential to consolidating our economic drive.

He said the draft Budget Estimate earlier submitted to members was to strengthen government fiscal policy and economic policy for 2018.

“I went through the amendment,” he said.”But the basic of this amendment is that; we observed that we have overestimated debts payments on behalf of NAWEC which is over one million, but we negotiated these debts,  and instead of five years, it is seven years,” he said, adding that this has reduced the yearly debt burden on the budget.
