The past has a way of influencing our present, if we let it. The reason is that we dwell a lot on our past whilst living in the present. That should not be! When we live in the present our past becomes a ‘no-go area.’ We have drawn the curtain over it and therefore cannot be intimidated by it; otherwise, it will deter our progress and just pull us back.

The more we dwell on the past, the more we will fear for the future. The more we look at ourselves through the lenses of our yesterdays, the more difficult it will be to fulfil our destiny. The ransom for our past has been paid for in full by the blood of the Lamb. Our Lord Jesus Christ, who is the true Lamb, has taken away the sins of the world. Until He paid the price, sin was only covered and atoned for—just as you would cover a stain on your table with a table cloth so no one could see it. The tablecloth over the stain does not mean the stain has vanished. Of course not!

When Jesus Christ died on the cross, He became the ultimate price for sin. He washed every stain of sin away and now nothing can keep us bound. We have been set free indeed! To all who receive Him, to all who believe in His name, believe that your sin debt has been paid for in full. Do not let your past sins, however grave, make you unworthy of this gift of grace. No amount of good works or deeds can make you earn it, or entitle you to it. This is the reason His Father sent Him---to deliver us from the bondage of sin that has scarred us.

When you receive Jesus by faith you become a new creation altogether. Your past has been buried, never to rear its ugly head again. Man was not intended to die but to live forever. Since the devil deceived the first Adam, God had to find a way out. No one could fit the prescription, therefore He sent His Son Jesus---who knew no sin---to become sin for us. This second Adam has brought us freedom.

It may seem pretty easy but not quite. God gave His Only Begotten Son. It pained Him to the extent that when His Son hung on the cross, bearing the sins of the whole world, God the Father could not look at Him. “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Jesus cried. (Matthew 27:46) sinless blood had to be shed because “... without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.” (Hebrews 9:22b)

Stop making excuses! We have a one-way ticket that allows us to forget our past so we can look to the future, to the One who alone can forgive our sins---past, present and future. The voices of our past can only condemn us and make us feel unworthy, but we should remember we are the reason He died. God became a man, leaving His throne in heaven, to turn back the hands of time by securing for us everlasting life which we were credited with at the beginning but which we lost when Adam and Eve sinned by disobeying God.

Which voice are you listening to, the voice of defeat or the voice of triumph and victory? It is time to rise from the ashes of our past and begin to declare that ‘old man’ in us dead and no more. The time has come for us to start living a new life of hope, trusting in the name of our Lord Jesus so that we may experience eternal life FREE OF CHARGE. Nothing compares to it!
