The
secretary general and head of the United Democratic Party (UDP) Ousainou Darboe
has applauded Gambians for showing great maturity in the just concluded Local
Government elections.
On
the official Facebook page of the party, Mr. Darboe who is also the Foreign
Affairs minister expressed his delight over the peaceful electoral process.
“On
behalf of the United Democratic Party (UPD), I thank voters across the length
and breadth of this great country for further consolidating our new democracy
in participating in the just concluded Municipal and Area Council elections,”
he said.
He
thanked the voters for putting their confidence and trust in the men and women
his party presented but was quick to heaped praise on their opponents whom he
described as worthy opponents.
“I
am also thankful to our worthy opponents who fought gallantly and with great
dignity resulting in a smooth and peaceful election.”
“Together
we are showing the world a great example of a robust plural democracy at peace
and forward looking.”
Lawyer
Darboe reminded the elected councilors that voters chose them with the hope
that they will understand their needs and will exert maximum effort to address
their issues in the council they are sending them for. He said their mandate is
to reform, rebuild and reorient the councils to effectively and efficiently
deliver their statutory responsibilities to taxpayers.
The
Foreign minister urged them to pursuit harmony in their diverse constituents.
“I urge all of you to work hard in bringing your diverse constituents together
in pursuit of harmony and shared goals,” he said. “You represent the entirety
of your perspective wards not only people that voted for and that must be your
guiding and operational principle throughout your mandate. Consult all at all
times and serve all at all times during your tenure in office.”
