Court levies D25, 000 fine on Nigerian guilty of assault

A Nigerian national who was facing an assault charge before a Kanifing Magistrates’ Court has been found guilty and levied a 25, 000 dalasi fine as compensation to the complainant.

Magistrate Fattoumata Darboe levied the fine on Celine Odoh after she was found guilty of unlawfully assaulting Ida Drammeh by stabbing her with a broken bottle on her head, cheek and left arm at greenlight in Serrekunda and caused her actual bodily harm.

The prosecuting officer in the case told the court that Ms. Odoh found Ida at work place at green light and asked her about her room key but Ida told her that she has to wait for the manager because she (Ida) was closing.

He said following Ida’s response, Ms. Odoh pushed her down which led to a fight between them but they were separated by people. “The accused later went outside and came back with a broken bottle which she used to assault Ida twice on her head and on her cheek and left hand.”

He said Ida was taken to the hospital for treatment and Ms. Odoh was arrested and taken to Serrekunda Police station, where she was cautioned and changed. He said a medical report was issued to the victim at the hospital. The medical report was tendered and in evidence and marked as exhibit A.

Magistrate Darboe said the D25, 000 fine is to compensate Ida for her medical expenses, blood lost and injuries sustained, which, she was were indicated in the medical report.

She also ordered Ms. Odoh to pay the sum of D5, 000 in default to serve one month imprisonment.
