Lamine Diack is held against his will in France. It has been impossible for him to leave French territory for nearly two years. We believe that he meets the conditions to be granted bail and to make himself available to respond to justice whenever the need arises.
The fact that we are nationals of a country governed by the rule of law - Senegal - and their respectability we know of, are the guarantees that form the basis of our demand.
Without any prejudice this request is humanitarian, considering the advanced age of the accused and his current conditions.
We request that those who have the power to intervene in order for Lamine Diack to be granted bail and have all restrictions on his movements lifted to do so, because the conditions he is made to endure is unbearable for his entire family, friends and many proud Senegalese citizens who recognised his work and his contributions to his country of birth and development of sports.
It should be remembered that after fifty years in the service of Africans and world sports, Lamine Diack had retired with integrity. As president of the IAAF, he has given more space and power to the countries of the South, especially to Asia and Africa. All this shivered the conservatives, which is typical characteristic of this kind of sports organisation.
President Diack is one of the few Senegalese statesmen and leaders who have made Africa and global sport proud.
Everyone who knows him today has a bad time for their friend, for this man does not deserve such a fate. We trust in the man who believes in the noblest values of society.
So, we call on Senegalese government and all the men and women of goodwill here and elsewhere to get more involved and request for his freedom.
That is why we have initiated this petition, which we humbly ask for your support.
