Code of conduct for Media Practitioners set for validation

Friday, August 02, 2019

The Gambia Press Union (GPU) will organise a two-day forum to review and validate the Revised Code of Conduct for Media Practitioners which is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, 5th -6th August 2019.

The GPU Code of Conduct is the basis of self-regulation in The Gambia media, binding on all categories of journalists working with print, radio, TV, and New Media.

As the umbrella organisation for journalists in The Gambia, the GPU is mandated to promote freedom of expression and professionalism in the media. In pursuit of this mandate, the GPU in 1998 developed and adopted a code of conduct for journalists. However, the impact of the code and knowledge of its existence faded with time.

Inspired by attempts to establish a National Media Commission by the Ministry of Information and Communication Infrastructure, the GPU formed a six-member committee of media experts to review the 1998 code in 2013.  Given the lapse of time and emergence of new media platforms, the GPU executive board decided to review the code.

The multi-stakeholder validation will include presentations on each thematic area by the Review Committee.
