coach, Tom Saintfiet said he is optimistic of his side’s success in the 2021
Africa Cup of Nations draw, after the Scorpions were paired with the East
African country Djibouti for the preliminary round conducted at the CAF Extra
Ordinary General Assembly meeting in Cairo, Egypt on Thursday.
Saintfiet said he is satisfied to play with Djibouti in the preliminaries, saying that he was wishing to avoid the likes of Liberia and other big nations but said compared to their strength, the East African nation is a small football team but with good players in the French lower leagues.
Asked about the Scorpions chances of qualifying for the 2021 Afcon tournament, Saintfiet said the Scorpions performance against big nations across Africa in the last 12 months is enough testimony that The Gambia is on the right track to make it first appearance at the Afcon. “We are very optimistic of making it through but we have to respect Djibouti because they have young players on development stages and one cannot rule them out.”
According to him, preparation is needed hence Djibouti is a far away region and lot of travel will be needed, adding that they will count on the good planning, organisation and players they have at their disposal to win Djibouti.
