Tom Sainfiet has ended The Gambia’s winless run at the Stadium in Bakau after
guiding the Scorpions to a convincing 3-1 win over Benin in the 2019 Africa Cup
of Nations qualifiers played on Saturday.
The Scorpions last victory at the country’s biggest football arena was in September 2013 against Tanzania 2-0 in the qualifiers, since then they failed in their attempts under previous foreign coaches before their resounding win over the Squirrels.
The Gambia came from one nil down to beat Benin 3-1 in the return-leg clash in Banjul after the Squirrels defeated them 1-0 in the first leg played in Cotonou last year.
Lamin Jallow, debutant Baboucarr Jobe and Abdoulie Jallow were on target for the Scorpions in the second half after Benin took the lead in the first half.
The win ended The Gambia’s five years winless run at the Independence Stadium in Bakau
The victory earned the Scorpions 5 points in group D after five group matches and five points behind group leaders Algeria with 10 points, who hammered Togo 4-1 in Lome.
