Camp Africa briefs Media on Senegambia Integration Run

Officials of Senegalo-Gambia Permanent Secretariat last Thursday briefed the Media on the Senegambia run for integration which is scheduled from 18 to 22 January, 2019.

The run for integration is a relay run from the foot of the new bridge at Yelitenda- Bambatenda crossing point in the North Bank Region to Senegal’s capital Dakar, covering a distance of 320 km.

George Gomez, teaming with Camp Africa and working with the Senegalo-Gambia Permanent Secretariat, conceived the event. Gambia’s ministry of youth and sports targeting to foster peace and harmony between the two countries, supports it.

Both Presidents Macky Sall of Senegal and Adama Barrow of The Gambia have endorsed the event with the two governments now closely working to ensure the success of the event.

According to officials, world runners have agreed to help organize the event and mark the cause which if successfully organized can be the longest relay race in Africa and the second longest in the world.

Ambassador Fode Seck, executive secretary of the Secretariat said, “We are in business of branding Senegambia. In every country, the private sector is essential in making this historic event a success.”

In his presentation, the consultant, Tombong Saidy said the event would be a five-day activity with night stops in Kaolack and Mbour. He said there would be a total of 10 runners, 2 reserve runners and a team manager per relay team. “Only 10 runners will run per team and each runner will run the assigned distance per day.”

According to him, they are targeting at least 20 teams, 10 from The Gambia and 10 from Senegal in which each runner will run every day of the actual 3 days relay. “We are going to transport, accommodate and feed at least 300 people from Banjul to Dakar and back to Banjul. In addition, there will be a Senegambia team of medical personnel and Red Cross along a fleet of ambulances and security. The event will be covered live on televisions, radios and will be streaming live on social media Facebook, YouTube and Twitter.

The winning team will receive the Presidential trophy and cash prize; the second team will also receive Ministerial trophy and cash prize while the third team will receive the main sponsor’s trophy and cash prize. All registered athletes and participating companies will receive certificates. The cost of sponsorship for a team is D80, 000 or 1Million CFA.
